Once I left the silent stones of the Knight's Grave behind, I retraced my steps back towards the manor, my mind already racing ahead to my ultimate destination, the archives that lay deep beneath the library.

It was something I needed to do alone. Though a part of me longed to bring Ysabel further into my confidence, to involve her more deeply in the dangerous designs taking shape in my mind, I knew that whatever awaited me once I used the key, was a trial meant for me only.

Crucibles were often like that, solitary, unforgiving, and dangerous, and I, Jäger Paldane knew a few things about going alone.

If I truly intended to keep my sister safe in this strange second life, I could not risk her blindly stumbling into the dark dangers I now contracted with. For I was under no illusions; the sealed goddess I intended to unleash, whatever pact had been done long ago, would be anything but benign.

Forbidden knowledge always extracted a price from those who dared to grasp it, and while I was prepared for the cost, it was not a cost I would pass on to my family.

But even so, I could not turn aside from this path. The covenant between myself and the shadowed power behind my regression was clear, and if I was to prevent the worst of endings, I would dive into the abyss itself if needed.

To avoid my sister or any other prying eyes from following my trail, I would have to take a more discreet route to my destination, keeping to the manor's hidden ways and byways. And to elude the ever-present gazes of servants and guards, I would need to draw upon skills that had served me well in my first life, when stealth and subterfuge had often meant the difference between life and death.

I would keep her far from danger.

This was a trial I would face alone, and my preparations in advance with the potions would have to be enough.

And so I clung to the shadows as I slipped back into the manor grounds, drawing upon every scrap of subtlety and stealth I had learned in that far off future and moved through the shadows.

But even as I hurried through the manor grounds, I could feel the sealed power within the key beginning to stir, reacting to the dark energy I had brought with me from the future. Shadows seemed to deepen and lengthen as I passed, moving at the edges of my vision like living things.

I read the notification with a grim smile, feeling a flicker of dark amusement at the irony. In my old life, I'd spent years honing my skills in stealth and subterfuge, learning to move unseen and now, it seemed so much easier.
